INTRODUCTION TO PRINTMAKING

Ruby Oakley

Ruby_1_WEB ..

This introductory course covers five different processes of print making which are not commonly taught These include mono-printing using gelatine plate - so students will not need a press to continue printing at home. Other processes introduced include: dry-point etching on plastic, lino cuts, collagraph and pronto plate lithography.

By focusing on a different printing process each week students will discover their own style to create their own printing plates and prints on paper. It is my aim to ensure students leave with the confidence to produce more plates and prints completely on their own.

The course is aimed at beginners and those with some experience.

Children's Classes

- I teach children on school holiday programmes at Corbans Estate Arts Centre & Uxbridge Arts Centre.

I also teach print making workshops for LEOTC at Corbans & for various other events at various locations.

Adults Classes

EXPLORING PRINTMAKING | BEGINNERS TO INTERMEDIATE
This class covers 5 different processes of print making using a traditional press; dry-point etching, lino, collagraph, pronto (a type of paper lithography) and mono-printing using gelatine plate (no press is required for this). Learn a new process and create new prints each week.
FEE: $115 (Includes all materials)

LANDSCAPES IN PRINTMAKING | BEGINNERS TO INTERMEDIATE
This workshop focuses on landscapes as the subject matter for your own prints. We will be working with single colour lino cuts and single colour dry point etching. Using a special technique ‘Chin Colle’, we will add interest and colour to the finished prints.
FEE: $105 (Includes all materials)

PRINTMAKING WITHOUT A PRESS | BEGINNERS TO INTERMEDIATE
Learn two printmaking processes that can be easily reproduced at home without the use of a press: mono-printing (using gelatine plate) and relief printing. In this workshop, you will create multiple prints and explore texture, colour and layering.
FEE: $65 (Includes all materials)

PRINTING YOUR OWN GREETING CARDS | BEGINNERS TO INTERMEDIATE
Let yourself go designing and printing your own greeting cards. By using an etching press and exploring linocuts layered with mono-prints, you will produce original hand-printed cards. Demonstrations and stimulating examples will be shown throughout the course.
FEE: $65 (Includes all materials)

LAYERING IN PRINTMAKING | BEGINNERS TO INTERMEDIATE
You will explore 4 different print methods and then focus on layering prints either together, one on top of another or making multiple prints of individual plates, to create a variety of finished images. Layering results in dynamic patterns, textures and depth, impossible to achieve using only one process. These processes use gelatine plate mono-printing, dry-point etching on plastic.

PRINT & MAKE YOUR OWN CUSHION COVER | BEGINNERS TO INTERMEDIATE
In this workshop you will use the gelatine plate mono printing process, a versatile printing method, easy to do at home. Print onto fabric to create a one of a kind a cushion cover that might be an ideal present for someone special this Christmas! Please bring your own sewing machine or a hand sewing kit.
FEE: $55 (Includes all materials)

$280.00 PER TERM (plus a $55. material fee for all materials)

Weekend workshops

PRINTMAKING PHOTOGRAPHIC
$250.00 FOR EACH TWO DAY WORKSHOP (plus material fee)

The two print processes of solar and pronto plate are being offered together as they can both be utilised to produce prints directly from photographs, which is the focus of this workshop.

Solar plate uses UV light to etch the plate while Pronto is a type of paper lithography that makes use of a photocopier. This is almost a unique opportunity as rarely is tuition offered for these modern printmaking processes.

Inspirational examples will be provided as well as easy to follow demonstrations. Students will find these processes are an easy way of creating great looking prints.

The course is aimed at beginners and those with some experience.

PRINTMAKING ON PAPER AND FABRIC (without a press)

$250.00 FOR EACH TWO DAY WORKSHOP (plus material fee)

Day 1

This workshop explores the versatile method of mono-printing using gelatine plate, a method which does not require a printing press and is therefore easy to reproduce at home. Students will produce mono prints, and will play with colour, layering, texture, line and mass to produce individual works of art on paper. The class will progress to mono-printing on fabric with the option of also learning some screen-printing using paper stencils.

Day 2

The course introduces mark making and the creation of visual movement to enable students to make original, relief woodcuts using hand wood cutting tools. Students will complete the weekend having created a small collection of unique eye catching prints which have been printed on to paper by hand, without the use of a press.

The course is designed for beginners and intermediates, and will be presented in a fun and stimulating manner with demonstrations and inspirational examples included.
